New Year, New Products: Jelly Cubes

Jelly Cubes are here! These intriguing little toys are something special in the world of chainmail. Cube-shaped creations that wobble like a mound of jelly in your hand, they are delightfully squishy and fun. My site features five different patterns to select from in any color combo you like: Jelly Cubes.

What exactly is a jelly cube? A jelly cube is a kind of toy unique to chainmail. And it's aptly named too. Shaped like a cube, it behaves like a mound of jelly that rolls around in your hand with your motions. It feels squishy and floppy as if it's not made out of metal at all. It is though. It's all aluminum.

How do you make them? I start with loose rings, opening and closing them to form simple 1-by-1 chains. Then I turn those chains into sheets as shown below. As I work, I need to keep the color pattern in mind, following a strict order based on what I've planned out. After the sheets are assembled, I stack them on top of each other, linking each stack together with 40 connecting rings. These jelly cubes are 5x5x5 jelly cubes, meaning they have 5 stacks of 5 rows each or 5 flat rings each. The grand total ring count for each cube is 485 rings!

What gave you the idea for these? Jelly cubes have been on my list of things I wanted to make for a while. Many chainmail artists eventually take a stab at making these, so I figured I would some time down the road. But when a friend of mine specially requested one, that launched jelly cubes to the top of the list of new things to make!
